On January 5, 2012, Port Arthur authorities say dozens of people were hurt, and at least four critically injured, in a mass pileup involving as many as 50 vehicles on a highway near Port Arthur. According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, the chain-reaction collision on Highway 73 caused to cars to catch fire, but no one was killed. Authorities said 54 people were injured, with many treated for broken bones, abrasions and trauma. Reportedly, one of the four critically injured motorists suffered an apparent heart attack after the wreck. Authorities believe the collisions were caused by poor visibility due to a mixture of fog and smoke from a wildfire
