Sculptor Dies in Texas 18 Wheeler Accident
June 22, 2015A sculptor who designed more than 5,000 pieces, including the Houston Police Officers Memorial, died last week in a Texas 18 wheeler accident. Jesus Moroles, 64, died Monday night when his van rear-ended a tractor trailer on Interstate 35. According to a statement from the Texas Department of Public Safety, Mr. Moroles died at the scene. The driver was reported to be uninjured. State troopers and local police are investigating the causes of the Texas 18 wheeler accident.

The Texas 18 wheeler accident occurred near the small town of Jarrell, about 30 miles north of Austin. Mr. Moroles was driving northbound on I-35 from his home in Rockport. Mr. Moroles has left Rockport Monday afternoon after answering a jury duty summons that day. The Texas 18 wheeler accident happened late Monday evening. He was scheduled to start another commissioned sculpture when he arrived in Oklahoma early Tuesday morning.

Jesus Moroles was born in 1950 in Corpus Christi, Texas. As a youngster, he worked in the South Texas cotton fields with his parents. He attended El Centro College and graduated from the University of North Texas in 1978. He studied sculpture in Italy in 1980, then returned to his native Texas. His specialty was creating large-scale granite sculptures. Many of his works were on display in public spaces, including the Houston Police Officers Memorial, the New Mexico Veterans Memorial Park, and CBS Plaza in New York City.
Texas 18 Wheeler Accident Affects Art World
Mr. Moroles had also earned many accolades from his artwork. His work had been included in more than 200 group exhibits, as well as 130 solo shows. His works have been displayed in museums across the country. In 2007, Governor Rick Perry awarded him the Texas Medal of the Arts. The next year, President George W. Bush presented him with the National Medal for the Arts. In 2013, he was reportedly working on 25 commissioned sculptures. The weekend prior to the Texas 18 wheeler accident, he was arranging for transport for one of his pieces to an exhibit in Dallas.

Mr. Moroles also served as a teacher and inspiration for future artists. At the time of the Texas 18 wheeler accident, Mr. Moroles was leading a student internship program at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma in Chickasha. The school has a total enrollment of just over 900. The interns would learn about how to use the tools of the trade, including a diamond saw used to cut granite and marble.
